We all take the various functions of our hands for granted, particularly functions like the ability to straighten our fingers. However, this ability entirely depends on the thin extensor tendons that extend across the hand and through to the fingertips. One common problem that affects the ability to straighten the end joint of a finger or thumb is called mallet finger.

Mallet finger occurs when a sharp blow causes a tear in the extensor tendon. Although this injury is commonly associated with baseball players, it can happen to any athlete or physically active person whose fingertips are hit hard with a ball or any other unyielding object and are bent beyond their natural capacity. This results in an inability to straighten the affected finger with ease.

The mallet finger injury occurs in a variety of ways: The tendon is either ruptured or pulled away from the distal phalanx (finger bone) entirely. In severe cases, called an avulsion injury, a small section of bone is detached along with the extensor tendon. The fingers most susceptible to this injury are the small, ring, and long fingers of your dominant hand.

When you are unable to straighten your finger naturally, and the finger shows signs of painful bruising and/or swelling, it is crucial to apply ice immediately and keep the hand elevated in order to reduce the swelling. Your next step is to seek help from a qualified orthopedic physician, as professional medical treatment is the only way to restore function to the affected finger.

The most common treatment for mallet finger is a temporary splint that is worn for approximately 8 weeks in order to facilitate healing in the tendon. Serious cases with bone damage typically require surgery, a solution that will be discussed in detail at your appointment.
